Are metal roofs noisy when it rains?

A metal roof does not automatically make a home noisy. The sound you hear indoors depends on the layers between the panels and the room below, including the roof decking, insulation and ceiling.

If you like metal roofing but worry about rain keeping you awake, tell our 928 Roofing team. We'll talk through what's above your bedroom and which parts would change during a replacement.

A house is different from an open metal shelter

Many people picture rain hitting an open carport or shed when they think about metal roofing. In those spaces, there may be very little between the panels and the person underneath them. A finished home can have a roof deck, underlayment, insulation and an interior ceiling.

Those layers help reduce the rain noise that reaches the living space. That's why rain on an open carport isn't a reliable guide to what you'll hear inside your home.

Why the complete roof matters

A bedroom beneath an attic and a room with a vaulted ceiling may have different layers between you and the roof. Those differences affect how much sound reaches the room.

Replacing the panels and roofing materials does not necessarily change the attic insulation or interior ceiling. We consider those layers when explaining how a new metal roof may sound inside your home.

Tell us where quiet matters most. It may be a bedroom, a home office or the living room in your Munds Park cabin. We can look at the construction above those rooms when discussing your options.

What to ask before choosing a metal roof

These details help you plan a metal roof with comfort in mind:

  • What is between the roof panels and the rooms below?
  • Which of those layers will change during the replacement?
  • Does the insulation need to be checked?
  • What can you tell me about rain noise with this roof?
  • Would the roofing plan change the insulation or ceiling construction?

We explain how your home's construction affects rain noise. The panel material alone doesn't determine the sound inside, so we look at the layers between the roof and the rooms below.

Use project videos to understand the work

Our project footage can show the layers beneath the panels and how they go together. It's useful for understanding the work, but a recording from another home can't tell you exactly what rain will sound like in yours.

Sound is one part of choosing a roof. Appearance, maintenance, roof design and the complete installation also matter. Our standing seam installation guide explains more of the details behind the finished panels.
